Reached Mumbai at the age of 14

Jamsetji Tata was born and brought up in a Parsi family. His ancestral profession was that of a priest, but his father Nusserwanji Tata decided to enter business. When he moved ahead breaking the family tradition, it had an impact on young Jamsetji. At the age of just 14, he went to Bombay to live with his father and enrolled in Elphinstone College.

Gave tough competition to the British

Jamsetji entered business at a time when the Indian people were feeling frustrated due to the British rule. At such a time, he decided to enter business, although he faced some failures in the beginning, but he did not give up. After this, at the age of 29, Jamsetji established Alexandra Mill in Bombay in 1869 with a capital of Rs 21,000. His decision became the foundation of the business empire of Tata Group.

Many works done for employee welfare

Jamsetji started giving allowances to the employees at Empress Mills, due to which the Tata Group was recognized as an Employee Welfare Organization. From 1880 till his last breath in 1904, Jamsetji established the Tata Group. From educational organizations to steel and motor industries were established.

Today, Tata Group operates 29 companies, which include TCS, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Steel, Titan, Tanishq, Voltas, Tata Chemicals, Tata Communication, Trent and Tata Elxsi. Including all these companies, the market cap of Tata Group companies is 311 billion dollars i.e. about Rs 24 lakh crore.
