Announcing the formation of the 16th Finance Commission, the Central Government has appointed Professor Arvind Panagariya, former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, as its Chairman. The Central Government has appointed Ritwik Ranjanam Pandey, Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry, as the Secretary of the Commission. Let us tell you that recently the Central Government approved the Terms of Reference for the formation of the 16th Finance Commission. This commission will give recommendations for the next five years, starting April 1, 2026. Will submit its report to the President in October 2025.
Who is Arvind Panagariya?
Arvind Panagariya is the former vice chairman of NITI Aayog. The command of the Finance Commission will now be in the hands of Professor Arvind Panagariya at Columbia University. His tenure will be until the submission of the report, or until October 31, 2025. Arvind Panagariya was born in the year 1952. He has held responsibilities in many important positions. He is a professor of economics at Columbia University. He has played the role of Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Apart from this, he has worked in positions at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization. In 2015, the Modi government made him the first vice chairman of NITI Aayog. He had done excellent work during his tenure in NITI Aayog. For which PM Modi had praised him a lot. Professor Panagariya has also been a member of SEBI. Apart from this, Professor Panagariya has also served on the Board of Governors of the Indian Council for Research and International Economic Relations.
